MARKET TRENDS
Premium ceramics and resin-coated sands are gaining share as deeper, more complex wells reward higher-performing proppant
25 Jun 2026

North America's frac sand market is entering a new phase, one where premium materials are steadily replacing commodity-grade products. As shale wells extend farther underground and geological conditions become more demanding, producers are turning to engineered proppants that can withstand greater stress while maintaining flow through the reservoir.
That shift is creating a clear divide across the industry. Lightweight ceramic proppants are projected to expand at 6 to 9 percent annually through 2035, nearly twice the pace expected for conventional products. Stronger materials allow operators to use less volume while sustaining conductivity, making performance, rather than price alone, the deciding factor.
Manufacturers are responding with heavier investment in specialty processing and coating technologies. Companies such as U.S. Silica, Carbo Ceramics, and Covia are competing for higher-value contracts by developing products that resist closure stress and improve production in increasingly challenging formations. For suppliers without those capabilities, protecting margins will become progressively harder.
The economics are reshaping buying decisions as well. Paying more upfront for resin-coated sands or lightweight ceramics can reduce lifting costs across a well's productive life, particularly as laterals stretch beyond two miles. What was once considered a niche upgrade is becoming standard practice, giving early movers in premium proppants a durable advantage as North American drilling grows more technically demanding.
